EU FAMILY MEMBERS

Family members of a national of a European Economic Area country who hold a Residence Card issued by the UK authorities, do not need a visa to enter Italy if travelling with/joining the EU family member in Italy (EU Directive 2004/38/CE, as implemented by Italian law no. 30 of 6/02/2007). Therefore, no visa can be issued under any circumstances.

The UK Residence Card must bear the following specific wording:

PLEASE NOTE: The holder of the "RESIDENCE CARD OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF A UNION CITIZEN" or "RESIDENCE CARD OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF AN EEA NATIONAL" travelling ALONE (i.e. without travelling with – or joining - the Italian or EU citizen) must submit all the required documents as an ordinary applicant [click here to be redirected to tourism visa application] and will be subject to the appropriate visa fee.

You will need a visa if any other different wording from the above appears on your UK Residence Documentation/Permit.

Who is eligible to apply as a EU family member:

A. Spouse, if not legally separated and not under 18 years of age;

B. Children under 21 years of age (on application submission), including children of the spouse and children born out of wedlock, provided that, for children under 18 years of age, the other parent (if there is another parent), has given his/her consent;

C. Children older than 21 years old if they are unable to support their indispensable necessities of life because of their health conditions entailing total disability (this must be proven);

D. Dependent parents if they are unable to support their indispensable necessities of life because of their health conditions entailing total disability (this must be proven).

All documents must be printed out and presented in original plus a photocopy where required. Applicants should always appear in person. Applicants must provide:

1) Duly completed application form [click here], [E@pplication];

2) Valid passport or travel document (original plus one photocopy), valid at least 3 months beyond the return date of your trip from Italy and at least with two blank pages. The passport will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved;

3) Valid UK Residence Permit (original plus one photocopy), valid at least 3 months beyond the return date of your trip in Italy;

4) Proof of relationship: marriage/birth certificate (original plus one photocopy). Please, note:

a. certificates older than 6 months will NOT be accepted;

b. certificates issued by a foreign authority other than the UK, MUST be translated in English or Italian and legalised by the Italian Consular Office of the issuing Country OR by the Consular Authority in the UK of the issuing Country;

c. certificates issued by one of the Schengen countries will be accepted only if multilingual, otherwise please refer to second note;

d. Italian nationals will need to be registered at the AIRE office of the Consulate General of Italy in London and marriage certificate must be registered at the Consulate General of Italy in London;

5) EU relative’s passport (original plus one photocopy);

6) Round trip fully paid travel tickets, please note:

a. if traveling by plane, train or bus the ticket must be printed directly from the airline/trainline/bus operator showing passenger name, dates, from/to and paid price;

b. if traveling by car, ferry tickets or euro tunnel tickets are required alongside with car registration (original and photocopy), car insurance (original and photocopy), driving licence (original plus photocopy); if you are renting a car the same documentation is required plus the car rentals documents;

c. if traveling among multiple Schengen countries, travel tickets are mandatory between every border;

d. if using the services of third parties, such as travel agencies, note that they will be accepted only if they are based in the U.K. or in one of the Schengen countries. Travel tickets must always be issued from the airline/trainline/bus operator themselves and any other paper will not be considered. This applies to letter a), b), c);

7) Declaration from the EU relative’s stating the applicant is travelling – or joining – the EU family member.

For Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq: Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq need to provide full names of mother and father and it must result from a birth certificate or Consular declaration.

THE VISA IS FREE OF CHARGE ONLY IF THE APPLICANT COMPLIES WITH ALL THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT, AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPOINTMENT, YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNLESS PRESENTED WITH ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS. IF ALL THE ITEMS LISTED ABOVE ARE NOT PRESENTED, THE APPLICANT WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE A NEW APPOINTMENT.

FURTHERMORE, THE APPLICANT, IS HEREBY INFORMED THAT SUBMITTING ALL THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION, DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE ISSUANCE OF ANY PARTICULAR VISA.
