Recognition of British qualifications

Foreign qualifications are not automatically recognised in Italy.

Holders of British qualifications (awarded by officially recognised educational institutions or professional bodies), who intend to have them recognised in Italy must contact one of the following authorities:

  • for pre-university diplomas or qualifications – Uffici Scolastici Provinciali;
  • for foreign degrees – Universities;
  • for foreign PhDs – the Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca;
  • for the recognition of professional qualifications (to practise a regulated profession in Italy) the relevant Ministries. A non-exhaustive list of the relevant Ministries in charge of the recognition of the professional qualifications and the professions for which they are responsible please visit the website of CIMEA;
  • to take part in a “concorso” (public competition): https://www.miur.gov.it/

For all the above cases, it will be necessary to request a “Dichiarazione di Valore” (Declaration of Value) issued by the relevant Italian Consulate in Great Britain. Once recognised and declared equivalent to an Italian qualification, they will have legal value in Italy.
