1. If the applicant is NOT registered in the AIRE database

Italian citizens travelling temporarily to England who have their ID Cards stolen or lost can come to the Consulate from Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm, and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm (for departures on Sundays or Mondays), WITHOUT APPOINTMENT, to obtain a temporary Emergency Travel Document (ETD), valid 5 days, with which to return to Italy. Once in Italy, the Italian citizen can go to their own Town Hall and ask for the issue of a new ID document.

Click here for more information on how to obtain an ETD.

2. If the applicant is registered in the AIRE database

In case of loss / theft of the ID card, if registered with AIRE the citizen can ask the Consulate to issue a new ID Card ("duplicate"). Click here for the procedure.

3. In case of lost and found of the ID Card

Lost and found ID Cards are normally returned to the Consular Offices in whose district the theft or loss occurred.
We therefore invite those who have recently suffered a theft/loss abroad to contact the Consulate for more information.
It is noted that the possible withdrawal of the aforementioned documents may be made, at the Consular Office where the discovery took place, as follows:

  • at the Consular Office branches
  • at the request by mail with shipping charged costs

With reference to the ID cards issued by the consular network stolen or lost abroad, will be care of the Consular Offices to communicate the finding to the holder, affirming that they will be destroyed if one had not been claimed back one year from the date tempering.
