3.2. Passport processing times and validity
A biometric passport is a travel document that contains an electronic microchip. The microchip holds your child’s personal details, their photograph and their fingerprints. We don’t need to collect fingerprints if you’re applying for a child under the age of 12 or if they are permanently unable to travel. Please refer to the section “Apply for a passport if you are permanently unable to travel” for more information.

Passport validity:

Age of applicant Passport validity
18 + 10 years
Between 3 and 17 5 years
Under 3 3 years

Morning appointments
If your child is registered with the Italian Consulate in London (A.I.R.E or Anagrafe Italiani Residenti all’Estero) and if their application is complete, we are normally able to issue your child’s passport on the same day. In some cases we may have to carry out routine security checks which could delay their application.

If they are not registered with the Italian Consulate in London, you can still apply, but their passport will only be issued if other Italian authorities authorise us to do so. Your child’s passport will not be issued on the day of your appointment.

Afternoon appointments (Temporarily suspended)

Afternoon appointments are solely for:

• collecting biometric data (fingerprints). We won’t be able to issue the passport on the same day. Your child’s new passport will be posted back to you within 30 days of receipt of your application.
• applicants who are registered with the Italian Consulate in London (A.I.R.E or Anagrafe Italiani Residenti all’Estero)
• applicants who are aged 12 and above
