European Elections

Law 459/2001 on the exercise of the right to vote abroad does not apply to European Elections, which are instead governed by law no. 18 of 24 January 1979 and subsequent amendments.

The postal vote system does not apply to European Elections. Eligible Italian electors permanently residing in a country of the European Union can go to ad hoc polling stations set up locally by the diplomatic or consular mission.

Italian electors residing abroad can, by the deadlines laid down by law, opt to vote for the candidates of the country of residence. They can also return to Italy to vote at their municipality (Comune) of residence, by taking advantage of the travel fare reductions.
