The National Insurance Number is a unique personal number (comparable to the Italian “Codice Fiscale”), made up of letters and number, issued by the Department for Work and Pensions through which you can pay social security and pension contributions, which entitle you to a number of social security benefits.

To be able to work in the UK you must have one.
