{"id":14233,"date":"2025-06-23T16:26:27","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T14:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/?page_id=14233"},"modified":"2025-12-31T13:11:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T12:11:27","slug":"re-acquisition-of-citizenship-for-former-italian-citizens","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/re-acquisition-of-citizenship-for-former-italian-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-acquisition of Italian citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Re-acquisition for former citizens \u2013 temporary provision valid until 31<sup>st<\/sup> December 2027<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new law n. 74 of 23\/05\/2025, which ratified the Decree Law n. 36 of 27\/03\/2025, has modified art. 17 of law n. 91\/1992, related to the re-acquisition of Italian citizenship for former citizens, who can just formalise \u00a0a declaration via this Consulate General.<br \/>\n<strong>Such declarations must be submitted between 01\/07\/2025 and 31\/12\/2027.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The re-acquisition of Italian citizenship will be valid from the day after the declaration has been finalised by the applicants with this office. <strong>Therefore, applicants who will formalise said declaration would not be recognised as Italian citizens since birth, but from the day after the re-acquisition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The applicants must be born in Italy or, if born abroad, must have lived in Italy for at least 2 continuous years;<\/li>\n<li>The applicants lost Italian citizenship before 15\/08\/1992<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new modified art. 17, c. 1, of law n. 91\/1992, does\u00a0<strong>NOT<\/strong>\u00a0apply to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applicants who lost Italian citizenship as per provisions at art. 8, c. 3, of law n. 555\/1912: \u201ccolui che, avendo accettato impiego da un Governo estero od essendo entrato al servizio militare di potenza estera, vi persista nonostante l\u2019intimazione del Governo italiano di abbandonare entro un termine fissato l\u2019impiego o il servizio\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>Applicants who did not opt for Italian citizenship, as per art. 5, c. 2, of law n. 123\/1983: \u201cfiglio minorenne, anche adottivo, di padre cittadino o di madre cittadina che, in caso di doppia cittadinanza, poteva optare per una sola cittadinanza entro un anno dal raggiungimento della maggiore et\u00e0\u201d. PLEASE NOTE! Those who have opted for a foreign citizenship under the same legislation, formally renounced to Italian citizenship and cannot reacquire it under this law provision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT AT THE APPOINTMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Valid proof of ID (e.g. passport).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Valid proof of address (e.g. utility bill, council tax);<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>For applicants born in Italy<\/strong>: \u2018atto integrale di nascita\u2019, in original, to be requested to the Italian Municipality of birth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For applicants born abroad<\/strong>: original foreign full birth certificate duly legalised and translated into Italian (<a href=\"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/cittadinanza-per-discendenza\/legalizzazione-e-traduzione-dei-certificati\/\">Legalisation and translation of certificates<\/a>) + \u2018atto integrale di nascita\u2019, in original, to be requested to the Italian Municipality of registration;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Certificate of residence in Italy (called \u2018certificato storico di residenza anagrafica\u2019)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 only for applicants born abroad, to be requested to the Italian Municipality of residence in Italy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Documents proving date and loss of Italian citizenship, e.g.:<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Certified copy of foreign naturalisation\/citizenship certificate, redacted by a Notary Public, whose signature must be legalised by apostille and translated into Italian (<a href=\"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/cittadinanza-per-discendenza\/legalizzazione-e-traduzione-dei-certificati\/\">Legalisation and translation of certificates<\/a>).<br \/>\n2. Any documents issued by the competent foreign authority of naturalisation, duly legalised and translated into Italian.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Payment of the consular fee of euros 250 (please verify the corresponding Pound sterling fee at <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/info-utili\/tariffe-consolari\/\"><strong>Consular fees<\/strong><\/a><strong>), to be done by transfer to<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Account owner: CONSULATE GENERAL OF ITALY IN LONDON<br \/>\nAccount number: 00568803<br \/>\nSort code: 30-91-37<br \/>\nReference: \u201cRiacquisto cittadinanza + name and surname\u201d<br \/>\nPlease ensure the payment is credited to the Consulate within 2 days prior to the appointment \u2013 we suggest proceeding with an instant transfer.<br \/>\nOn the day of the appointment, applicants must submit a PRINTED bank attestation\/receipt of the completed transfer. Otherwise, the service will NOT be guaranteed.<br \/>\nPlease note that the payment is NON-refundable, regardless of the outcome of the application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>HOW TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The appointment will be allocated by this office \u2013 applicants must send first an email with scanned copies of the documents requested to the following email address: <a href=\"mailto:cittadinanza.londra@esteri.it\">cittadinanza.londra@esteri.it<\/a>. We kindly ask to indicate the following subject: <strong>\u201cDICHIARAZIONE RIACQUISTO DI CITTADINANZA\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT: citizens who voluntarily renounced Italian citizenship after 16\/08\/1992, or not included in the criteria listed above, can still re-acquire Italian citizenship as per provisions of Art. 13 L. 91\/1992.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nIf interested, please contact this citizenship office (<a href=\"mailto:cittadinanza.londra@esteri.it\">cittadinanza.londra@esteri.it<\/a> ), in order to gather information on appointment, documents and payment required.<\/p>\n<p>The request should specify:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Name, surname, place and date of birth of the applicant<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Applicant\u2019s address and proof of residence in the United Kingdom<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; How and when the applicant acquired foreign nationality<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>RE-ACQUISITION FOR ITALIAN WOMEN MARRIED TO A BRITISH MALE CITIZEN BEFORE 01\/01\/1948<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Italian women married to British citizens before 01\/01\/1948 lost their Italian citizenship whilst not-voluntarily acquiring British citizenship.
