{"id":2072,"date":"2022-08-26T12:03:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T10:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/?page_id=2072"},"modified":"2026-09-22T13:14:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T11:14:18","slug":"rimpatrio-delle-salme-ceneri","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino\/assistenza-ai-cittadini-allestero\/rimpatrio-delle-salme-ceneri\/","title":{"rendered":"Repatriation of human remains\/ashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Repatriation of Human Remains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the introduction of human remains into Italy, the family or the appointed Funeral Director in England must send, in a PDF file, to the Welfare Office (<a href=\"mailto:sociale.londra@esteri.it\">sociale.londra@esteri.it<\/a>) of the Consulate General the relevant application, together with scanned copies of all the following documents:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Original death certificate, or Coroner&#8217;s certificate, legalised by means of an Apostille (legalisation with Apostille is required only if the deceased was of Italian nationality; otherwise the original death certificate is sufficient);<\/li>\n<li>Embalming certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Free from infection certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Coroner&#8217;s &#8220;Out of England&#8221; certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Passport or identity card of the deceased;<\/li>\n<li>Funeral Director&#8217;s declaration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is important to specify in the application the cemetery and the details of the tomb\/plot where the burial is to take place.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian Consulate will forward the application to the Municipality where the deceased will be buried. Once authorisation has been obtained, the Consulate will arrange with the family and\/or the Funeral Director an appointment for the affixing of the seals and the issuing of the Consular Certificate which accompanies the coffin onto Italian territory, upon the payment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/info-utili\/tariffe-consolari\/\">consular fee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the appointment, the above-mentioned documents must be presented in their <strong>original<\/strong> form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical requirements for the repatriation of coffins<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The body must be embalmed in accordance with the regulations in force on the matter and with the international standard for transportation;<\/li>\n<li>The body must be enclosed in a metal casket, the thickness of the sheet metal being not less than 0.66 mm if zinc, or 1.5 mm if lead;<\/li>\n<li>The metal casket, whether it encloses the wooden one or is contained within it, must be hermetically sealed by soldering, and between the two caskets, at the base, there must be a layer of pulverised peat, wood sawdust or other absorbent material, which must in all cases be biodegradable and recognised as suitable;<\/li>\n<li>A coffin with or without carvings may be used, provided that the thickness of the timber is not less than 25 mm;<\/li>\n<li>At the head and foot of the coffin, in order to affix the seal, a hole 4 cm wide and 1 cm deep must be made over two of the screws.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Repatriation of Ashes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the introduction of ashes into Italy, the family or the appointed Funeral Director in England must send, in a single PDF file, to the Welfare Office (<a href=\"mailto:sociale.londra@esteri.it\">sociale.londra@esteri.it<\/a>) of the Consulate General the relevant application, together with scanned copies of all the following documents:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Original death certificate, or Coroner&#8217;s certificate, legalised by means of an Apostille (legalisation with Apostille is required only if the deceased was of Italian nationality; otherwise the original death certificate is sufficient);<\/li>\n<li>Passport or identity card of the deceased;<\/li>\n<li>Cremation certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Funeral Director&#8217;s declaration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>With regard to the application form, please note the following:<\/p>\n<p>It must contain the full details of the deceased \u2013 name, surname (maiden surname for married women), place and date of birth, as well as place, date and cause of death, and port of entry; it is also mandatory to specify the cemetery and the details of the tomb\/plot where the burial is to take place.<\/p>\n<p>If the ashes are to be kept at a private residence, it is necessary to indicate the exact address, the full name of the person who will keep the ashes (with an indication of their relationship to the deceased), and a photocopy of their identity document.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian Consulate will forward the application to the Municipality of the place to which the urn is destined. Once authorisation has been obtained, the Consulate will arrange with the family and\/or the Funeral Director an appointment for the affixing of the seals and the issuing of the Consular Certificate which accompanies the urn onto Italian territory, upon the payment of the<a href=\"https:\/\/conslondra.esteri.it\/en\/info-utili\/tariffe-consolari\/\"> consular fee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the appointment, the above-mentioned documents must be presented in their <strong>original<\/strong> form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Casket requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The ashes must be placed in a solid hardwood casket.
