The move to an e-Visa is free, and will not impact a person\u2019s underlying immigration status, only the way that they prove that status.<\/p>\n<p>Holders of <strong>pre-settled status<\/strong> and <strong>settled status<\/strong> under the EU Settlement Scheme, and others who used the <em>\u2018UK Immigration: ID Check mobile App\u2019<\/em> to make an immigration application <strong>already have an e-Visa<\/strong> and do not need to do anything other than ensure that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details\">keep their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account updated<\/a> with their latest passport\/national identity card details, and current contact information. Italians who have acquired British or Irish citizenship do not need to do anything.<\/p>\n<p>The physical documents being replaced with e-Visas are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Biometric Residence Permit<\/em> (<strong>BRP<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><em>Biometric Residence Card<\/em> (<strong>BRC<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><em>Ink stamps, or visa vignette stickers in a passport indicating possession of an indefinite leave to enter or remain (<strong>legacy paper documents<\/strong>)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you use a BRP, or a passport containing an ink stamp or visa vignette sticker to prove your immigration status, you should go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/evisa\">www.gov.uk\/evisa<\/a> for further information on what action you need to take to create an <em>UKVI<\/em> account and obtain an e-Visa.<\/p>\n<p>Most <strong>BRP and BRC<\/strong> documents are due to expire on <strong>31<\/strong> <strong>December 2024<\/strong> but <u>you will be able to use an expired BRP to create a UKVI account<\/u> to access your eVisa<strong>.<\/strong> <strong>BRP <\/strong>holders <u>will still be able to use the online <\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/prove-right-to-work\">right to work<\/a><u> and <\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/prove-right-to-rent\">rent<\/a><u> services<\/u> to prove their rights <u>once their BRP<\/u> <u>expires<\/u> \u2013 provided they still have valid status \u2013 although the Home Office encourages them to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa. BRP holders may have received an email containing instructions on what they should do, but there is no need to wait for an email before taking action at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/evisa\">www.gov.uk\/evisa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRC <\/strong>holders who have been granted <strong>status under the EU Settlement Scheme<\/strong> do not need to do anything other than ensure that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details\">keep their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account updated<\/a> with their latest passport\/national identity card details, and current contact information.<\/p>\n<p><u>Holders <strong>of legacy paper documents<\/strong><\/u>, including passports containing ink stamps and visa vignette stickers, <a href=\"https:\/\/homeofficemedia.blog.gov.uk\/2024\/09\/10\/media-factsheet-evisas-2\/\">can continue to use their document<\/a> <u>to prove their immigration status<\/u> as before.\u00a0However the Home Office encourages individuals to take action at\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eVisa\">www.gov.uk\/eVisa<\/a>\u00a0to avoid unnecessary delays when proving their status.<\/p>\n<p>The official Home Office website &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/evisa\">www.gov.uk\/evisa<\/a> &#8211; contains all the details and instructions on what you need to do to create a UKVI account and access your eVisa. A range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/online-immigration-status-evisa-help-video\/what-is-an-evisa\">Home Office videos also illustrate the process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you encounter any problems creating your account or need assistance, you can contact the Home Office using this free official service: <a href=\"https:\/\/ukimmigration-support-webchat.homeoffice.gov.uk\/evisa\">eVisa Webchat (homeoffice.gov.uk)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The issuance of British eVisas is of the exclusive competence of the UK Authorities. You can access your digital EUSS status via this link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/view-prove-immigration-status\">View and prove your immigration status: get a share code &#8211; GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>EU citizens who have <em>indefinite leave to enter or remain<\/em> but have not applied for EUSS status by the original deadline, may be able to submit a late application to the EUSS or, alternatively, can make a <em>\u201cno time limit\u201d<\/em> (NTL) application to obtain an e-Visa &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/online-immigration-status-evisa\">Online immigration status (eVisa) &#8211; GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Please note that permanent residence documents issued by the British Authorities under EEA regulations before the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020 ceased to be valid on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/permanent-residence-document-eu-eea\">30 June 2021<\/a>.\u00a0 Holders of such documents had to apply to the EUSS by the deadline of 30 June 2021.
