The eligibility criteria to apply for citizenship by marriage as per art. 10, Law n. 555/1912, have changed with the introduction of Law n. 74/2025.
Therefore, all the following MUST apply in order to submit an application:
- The marriage must have occurred between a foreign female citizen with an Italian male citizen prior to 27/04/1983;
- No divorce nor death of the Italian male citizen must have occurred prior to 27/04/1983;
- ONE of the following:
– The applicant must be born in Italy;
– One of the applicant’s parents or grandparents must be in possession exclusively of Italian citizenship at the time of their death;
– One of the applicant’s parents has lived in Italy for at least 2 continuous years after the acquisition of Italian citizenship and prior to the applicant’s birth.
The applicant is to be intended as the foreign woman married with an Italian male citizen prior to 27/04/1983.Moreover, please note applications are intended as submitted when the applicant has attended in person, presented all documents in original, and paid the 600 Euros consular fee (the payment date must match the date of the appointment).

Once assessed the case, we will provide all details about the documents to gather and submit at the appointment to the applicant, and will allocate an appointment date once examined the same digitally. There is no need to book an appointment via the Prenot@MI system for this procedure.
