Re-acquisition of Italian citizenship

Re-acquisition for former citizens – temporary provision valid until 31st December 2027

The new law n. 74 of 23/05/2025, which ratified the Decree Law n. 36 of 27/03/2025, has modified art. 17 of law n. 91/1992, related to the re-acquisition of Italian citizenship for former citizens, who can just formalise  a declaration via this Consulate General.
Such declarations must be submitted between 01/07/2025 and 31/12/2027.

The re-acquisition of Italian citizenship will be valid from the day after the declaration has been finalised by the applicants with this office. Therefore, applicants who will formalise said declaration would not be recognised as Italian citizens since birth, but from the day after the re-acquisition.
