How to renounce Italian citizenship

Italian citizens, living within this consular district, who wish to voluntarily renounce their Italian citizenship, can make a formal declaration of renunciation of Italian citizenship as per art. 11 of Law n.91/1992.
Please contact the Citizenship Office via email (cittadinanza.londra@esteri.it) once gathered the following documentation:

  • Estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita italiano: to be submitted in original, issued by the Italian Municipality of birth;
  • Valid proof of address (e.g. council tax, utility bill);
  • Document proving possession of another citizenship – e.g. valid British passport;
  • Certified copy of your British naturalisation certificate, issued by the Home Office, redacted by a Notary Public, whose signature must be duly legalised by apostille and translated into Italian (link sezione sito).
  • All valid Italian ID documents in your possession (e.g. passport, identity card);
  • Receipt of payment of 250 EUR, to be made by bank transfer to the Ministry of the Interior. At the appointment, the applicant should also present copy of the bank statement proofing the payment done to the Ministry of Interior.
    Payments are to be made by international bank transfer from the applicant’s bank account into the following bank account of the Ministry of the Interior.

The payment of the renunciation fee (Art 4b – Consular fees – Consolato Generale d’Italia Londra) must be made in pounds, exclusively by British debit card, on the day of the appointment. Please note that the payment is NON-refundable, regardless of the outcome of the application.
