Reporting the theft or loss of identity documents

It is not possible to report the loss or theft of identity documents through this Notarial Office. Such reports must be made directly to the relevant authority when applying for a replacement of the lost or stolen document.

  • Italian Passport Please refer to the relevant passport information page.
  • Italian Identity Card Please refer to the relevant identity card information page
  • Italian Driving Licence

  1. Italian citizens registered with AIRE and foreign nationals residing in the United Kingdom must report the loss or theft of their Italian driving licence directly to the UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) when applying to exchange their Italian licence for a UK driving licence. If the lost or stolen Italian driving licence cannot be exchanged for a UK licence (for example, because it was originally obtained by converting a licence issued by a country that is not on the UK’s list of designated countries or territories), the applicant will instead be required to pass the DVLA’s theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain a UK driving licence.
  2. Italian citizens who are not registered with AIRE must apply for a replacement driving licence directly through the competent authorities in Italy and report the theft or loss as part of that application.
