British Certificates for Use in Italy There are various types of criminal record certificates that may be issued by different authorities in the United Kingdom, depending on the applicant’s place of residence and the purpose for which the certificate is required.
Applicants should contact:
- The Metropolitan Police if they currently reside or have previously resided within the Greater London area;
- The nearest police station if they currently reside or have previously resided outside the Greater London area https://www.met.police.uk/contact/find-a-police-station/ ;
- The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) if the certificate is required for employment with organizations or associations working with children or vulnerable individuals http://www.crb.gov.uk/.
Legalisation
To be valid outside the United Kingdom, these certificates must be legalized. The applicable legalization procedure depends on the country in which the certificate will be used:
- If the receiving country is included in the list, legalization must be carried out by the UK Legalisation Office. Italy falls into this category.
- If the receiving country is not included in that list, legalization must be carried out by the embassy or consulate of the receiving country in the United Kingdom.
Translation
To obtain a translation of a British criminal record certificate that will be valid in Italy, applicants may either:
- Use a certified translator in the United Kingdom and then obtain an apostille for the translation as well; or
- Use a translator whose translation is sworn before (or certified by) an Italian court.

Since there is no fixed fee schedule for translation services, applicants are advised to compare prices if the first services they find appear excessively expensive.
