For accidents occurring abroad, the Consulate ensures that, with the consent of the person involved, their family members are duly informed and that every possible assistance is provided in case of need for transfer to Italy (see Medical repatriation).
Warnings
Italian citizens visiting the United Kingdom are entitled to receive only emergency or non-deferrable medical treatments, if they hold the EU health card (EHIC – European Health Insurance Card or TEAM in the Italian acronym).
Failure to possess the health card may result in the direct payment of medical expenses incurred by the British National Health Service (NHS).
In any case, it is strongly advised to take out private health insurance valid for the duration of the stay in the United Kingdom. Such insurance is essential if a medical transfer from the United Kingdom to Italy becomes necessary.
