How to apply for a child passport – Postal applications, morning appointments (children aged 17 or under) and afternoon appointmets (adults and children aged 12 to 17)

 

How to apply for a child passport (children aged 0 to 11) – postal applications only

All Italian nationals residing in the London Consular district and registered in the AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero– Register of Italians residing abroad) may apply at the London Consulate General. For information on how to register in the AIRE, click here.

BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR A CHILD PASSPORT, even if you already have one, more specifically:

  • if you were born abroad (not in Italy) and;
  • If you have acquired Italian citizenship abroad or in Italy (but not through the London Consulate General),

YOU MUST FIRST ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD’S BIRTH CERTIFICATE HAS BEEN REGISTERED at your comune (Italian municipality). Moreover, at least one of the parents must be registered in the AIRE.

If you are applying for your child’s first passport, please read carefully “how to register a birth” section. if their birth certificate has not been registered in Italy, the applicant needs to submit the child’s original birth certificate (translated and legalised by means of an apostille in the country where it was issued) to be registered in Italy.

Currently the working time is around few weeks from the arrival of the document in London (i.e. not from the date of delivery to the honorary offices, especially if the documentation is not complete. They send us the documentation once a month).

CHECKLIST

  • MOD2 application form (pdf) duly completed and signed by both parents. Please fully complete the form (including telephone numbers and email addresses, as well as the minor’s height in centimetres, not in inches);
  • 2 recent identical passport-size photos (taken within 6 months), compliant with the international ICAO standards;
  • AFT2 form – Dichiarazione Sostitutiva Atto di Notorietà/Affidavit (pdf) including a photocopy of the ID document (passport, ID card or driving licence, page with photo and signature), as well as proof of occupation of the person authenticating the photo. For further information please visit the specific section.
  • Previous child passport, if available (even if it is expired or deteriorated) or if it is their first passport, a photocopy of another Italian identity document or foreign passport of the child;
  • 2 Photocopies of both parents’ ID document (passport or ID card, page with photo and signature) to proceed simultaneously to register the birth (Registry Office) and to issue the passaport (Passport Office). Please do not send your original ID documents;
  • Prepaid Special Delivery envelope (up to 500g – please make sure the stamp is not the printed version and has not been date-stamped) for posting your new passport and your old cancelled passport;
  • Postal Order made payable to Italian Consulate General (this is the only accepted method of payment for postal applications). To check the correct amount please refer to the Consular fees. Due to the quarterly change in the exchange rate, Italian nationals who intend to send Passport or ID card applications in the months of MARCH, JUNE, SEPTEMBER and DECEMBER are kindly invited to wait for the Consular fees of the following month to be published, which is usually around the 17th day of the above months. Because of the normal application processing times and quarterly accounting requirements not dependent on this Consulate General, the amount of the Postal Order could be the one of the month following the date of application. This is to avoid any possible requests for additional money by the relevant office and a subsequent delay in processing your application. For the other months, please check the fee here.

Who can authenticate your child’s photo

Under British legislation, a British or EU national can authenticate the minor’s photo by completing and signing the relevant AFT2 Form (pdf/doc). The photo cannot be authenticated by a relative of the minor. The person authenticating the photo must personally know the minor and their parents. Here the specific section.

Consent of both parents

MOD2 form must be signed by both parents. The consent is necessary even if the parents are not married, are separated or divorced, and even if the minor children already have their own passport. Alternatively, you may submit a separate Modulo Assenso Altro Genitore (Other Parent’s Consent Form) (pdf/doc).

In both cases, both parents must submit an ID document with photo and signature (passport or ID card) and must ensure that the signature on the ID document matches the one on the form.

If one of the parents of the minor children is a non-EU national (including British Citizens), the passport application form must be signed before a Consular officer (during opening hours for this service: Mon-Tue-Thu 3-5 pm), a public official in Italy or a British notary public (in this case the notary document must be legalised by means of an apostille). If the parent is in a country other than Italy or the UK, they will need to sign the consent form at the relevant consular office where they are located at the time.

If the other parent’s consent cannot be obtained, a Decreto del Giudice tutelare (Consular Decree) signed by the Consul General acting as Judge supervising a guardianship will be issued. The form MUST BE SENT BY POST and it will not be accepted hand-delivered. The Consul General in London acts as a Judge supervising a guardianship for minors residing and registered in the London consular district. If the minor is resident in Italy, the Tribunale dei Minori (Juvenile Court) is the competent authority. Updates can be requested to the Welfare Office (sociale.londra@esteri.it).

If one of the parents is deceased, a copy of their death certificate will need to be submitted.

 

 

 

How to apply for a child passport (children aged 12 to 17) – by appointment only

  • If one of the parents of the minor children is a non-EU national, the passport application form must be signed before a Consular officer, a public official in Italy or a British notary public (in this case the notary document must be legalised by means of an apostille). If the non-EU parent is in a country other than Italy or the UK, they will need to sign the consent form at the relevant consular office where they are;
  • 2 recent identical passport-size photos (taken within 6 months), compliant with the international ICAO standards;
  • Photocopy of both parents’ ID document (passport or ID card, page with photo and signature).
  • Previous child passport, if available (even if it is expired or deteriorated).

If you are applying for your child’s first passport, please also submit:

  • photocopy of another Italian identity document or foreign passport of your child.

How to apply for a passport (adults and children aged 12 to 17) – by afternoon appointemnt (PASSPORT NOT ISSUED ON THE SPOT)

If the appointment booked is in the afternoon, the passport will NOT be issued on the spot. Instead, it will posted within three working days of the appointment.

(If the passport appointment is in the morning, the passport will be issued on the spot).

ON THE DAY OF YOUR AFTERNOON PPOINTMENT YOU WILL NEED (CHECK LIST)

  • Postal order made payable to “Italian Consulate General” (this is the only accepted method of payment for postal applications; NO DEBT/CREDIT CARD). To check the correct amount please refer to the Consular fees on our website. Due to the quarterly change in the exchange rate, Italian nationals who booked an appointment on the last days of the months of MARCH, JUNE, SEPTEMBER and DECEMBER are kindly invited to refer to the Consular fees of the following quarter. In those cases, the amount of the Postal Order must be the one of the month following the date of the appointment. This is to avoid any possible requests for additional money by the relevant office and a subsequent delay in processing your application.
  • MOD1 application form (pdf), duly completed, for adults; MOD2 application form (pdf), duly completed, for minors;
  • Previous passport (expired or deteriorated or, if not available, national ID card);
  • If your passport has been lost or stolen, British police report or alternatively the relevant Italian lost/stolen passport form available at the Consulate or downloadable here (pdf). In this case you need to come to the appointment with another valid ID document or the above form;
  • If this is your first Italian passport, you need to submit an Italian ID document (ID card or driving licence) or a foreign document (passport);
  • 2 recent identical passport-size photos (taken within six months), compliant with the international ICAO standards
  • prepaid Special Delivery envelope (up to 500g – please make sure the stamp is not the printed version and has not been date-stamped) for posting your new passport and your old cancelled passport;

Other parent’s consent

Please visit the specific section, especially if one of the parents of the minor children is a non-EU national (including British Citizens).

If the other parent’s consent cannot be obtained, a “decreto del Giudice tutelare” (Consular Decree) signed by the Consul General acting as Judge supervising a guardianship will be issued. The form MUST BE SENT BY POST and it will not be accepted hand-delivered. The Consul General in London acts as a Judge supervising a guardianship for minors residing and registered in the London consular district. If the minor is resident in Italy, the Tribunale dei Minori (Juvenile Court) is the competent authority. Updates can be requested to the Welfare Office (sociale.londra@esteri.it).

PLEASE NOTE!

  1. The passport service is reserved to Italian citizens registered in AIRE living in the consular district of the Consulate General of Italy in London;
  2. For Italian citizens born abroad, the passport can be issued only if their birth certificate has been registered by the Italian Comune of AIRE registration. If that is not the case, the passport CANNOT be issued.
