Translation and legalisation of documents

Please note that this Consulate General does not provide translation services.

This Consulate does not certify (attest) the conformity of translations either, except in the following two cases:
• Declarations of value for British educational qualifications
• Civil status records of Italian citizens for the purpose of registration in Italy by this Consulate General

Please note that translations of civil status documents issued in the United Kingdom and submitted to the Consulate in London for transmission to Italian Municipalities do not need to include:

  • the translator’s personal details;
  • a declaration that the document is a true copy;
  • certification of the translator’s signature;
  • confirmation of the translator’s professional affiliation;
  • apostille.

Translations of documents in English issued in other countries cannot be certified by this Consulate. They must instead be carried out in the country where the document was issued and legalized by the Italian diplomatic or consular mission with jurisdiction over that territory.

Those who need to translate British documents from English into Italian for other purposes may choose one of the following options:

  1. Use a sworn translator in Italy – lists of sworn translators are available at Italian Courts (this translation has no legal value unless it is sworn before a Court or a notary);
  2. Have a translation (already prepared) sworn before an Italian Court, an Italian Municipality, or a notary.

Those who need to translate Italian documents into English may contact a translator found online or one of the translators  on the Consulate’s list of translators “professionals and institutions“.
