HOW TO REGISTER IN ITALY A DEATH OCCURRED ABROAD
(updated on 21/04/26 – CP-DC)
This Registry Office can process requests for the registration of death certificates of deaths that occurred both in the United Kingdom and in countries other than the United Kingdom.
Requests to transcribe death certificates of Italian nationals registered in the AIRE of London and died in countries other than the United Kingdom can be processed either by the Consulate in the country where the death occurred—based on its territorial jurisdiction over the death and the issuance of the certificate—or by the Consulate General in London—based on its jurisdiction over the registration of the deceased in its AIRE records.
Finally, requests for the registration in Italy of civil status records relating to events that occurred abroad may also be submitted by the individuals concerned and/or by anyone with a legitimate interest directly to the competent Italian municipality (see Article 12, paragraph 11, Presidential Decree 396/2000).
A. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

This Registry Office can process the request to register a death certificate ONLY if one of the following two prerequisites is met:
- The deceased is an Italian national;
- The deceased is a foreign citizen WITH family ties to an Italian national registered in the AIRE records of the Consulate in London.
